What to consider in a first car for a young driver – Part 6

My First Car

Teens may think they know what they want, but as parents we should know what’s best for them. Even if the teen is paying for their own car, the parents need to ensure that the car is safe. It is best to always to find out the history on used cars. You want to make sure that the car hasn’t been in any major accidents. You have to consider price as well. You want something that won’t break the bank and something that they could afford if they had to pay for it on their own.

A family car is a nice route to take because generally these cars are safer and built heavier and stronger. My first vehicle was a 1987 Dodge Dakota. You have to remember that teens are going to have accidents. Although my truck wouldn’t sound like a safe vehicle, no matter what came in my bumper’s way, I always walked away with no injuries and my truck had limited injuries as well.(I had been in quite a few mishaps in this truck) The older trucks are especially built tough. They are higher up to see more of your surroundings and have less blind spots.

If your teen wrecks a 500 dollar truck, at least it wasn’t a fifteen thousand dollar car. It is best to buy a vehicle with air bags intact and make sure that there are enough seat belts for the alloted number of seating in the car. Not only will your child be in the car, but a few of their friends will be as well. Make sure the car is up to date on it’s servicing. Always have your own mechanic check out the vehicle before purchasing, regardless of the year of the car.

Make sure your teen knows safe driving and how to handle the car under certain circumstances. How your child handles the car under rough circumstances will make a big difference in the safety. Promote seat belts and restrict how many people can be in the car at a time. Make sure you test drive the car before buying it. Check to make sure that all of the paint colors match. If the paint scheme is some what off from other parts of the car, then chances are the car has been wrecked and touched up.

So don’t just run right out and buy your child that new, super fast sports car they have always wanted. Sometimes the safest vehicles come with the smaller price tags.

It can be a scary time for any parent whose child is getting their first car. Just remember that above all else, safety should be the main priority.

Car Insurance Uk: Things to Know Before Buying First Car Insurance

My First Car (Don't laugh!)

This is true that car insurance UK protects one of your first investments, your car. But opting for it can be complicated and often new vehicle owners fail to compare different insurance rates and in turn fail to reap the financial benefits of finding the best and affordable insurance available to them. These days’ companies are providing so many additional benefits with their plans.

The question asked by most new vehicle owners is who needs car insurance and why? The answer is simple; it’s the law as it is a legal requirement in the UK. It protects you when you cause property damage or bodily injury to someone else when driving your car. If you are caught driving without car insurance you may be charged hefty penalties.

Generally people avoid it due to high premiums as new car insurance buyers get sucked into paying too much as premiums. Now the things have change and you don’t need to just assume that since you are purchasing your first vehicle insurance policy so you will have to pay extremely high premiums. Yes, sometimes it is true that you will pay higher premiums than people who have had car insurance for some time, but that does not mean you can not find affordable insurance.

You also can find the best and most affordable car insurance UK and here is a checklist of ways to find that.

Compare car insurance rates online and locally, it really works.

Tell the car insurance company that you are comparing X amount of companies so they know that you are looking for the best deal and they will suggest the same.

Always make sure that you know what car insurance discounts you may be eligible for. If you are not sure then ask the insurance agent of all their discounts.

If you are choosing full coverage car insurance then remember that the higher your deductible, the cheaper your car insurance premium will be.

Thus, don’t worry before buying your first car insurance policy, get as much knowledge as you can and ask for the best deal.

What to consider in a first car for a young driver – Part 3

My first car (s)..

It has finally arrived. That dreaded time of handing the keys over to your teen son/daughter. Just what car do you need to be handing them the keys to? Well the truth is it depends on what your teen likes and your budget. Outside of budget and likes however lies some very important factors to consider.

My parents thought best to get me a small car with little go when you hit the gas. Yes my car was a 4-cylinder. My first was a Chevy Caviler. This car was cheap on gas but made merely out of tin foil. I suggest getting an older model car that is cheap on gas and made to take abuse. Many young drivers will end up in fender benders if not an all out accident at some point with their first car.

I also suggest buying a used not new car. My first car was bought with my own money. I had worked all summer and saved until I could buy me a cheap car. These cars are easier to afford and not as much lost when you do get into that fender bender or accident as long as of course the people inside the car are all OK. Also if you have your child contribute or buy their own car chances are they are going to take better care of it and avoid the drag strip on Sat night and abstain from the urge to do donuts in the snow.

Always check a car well before buying it. Look at the miles and if possible the maintenance records. If the car has not been properly cared for it may not matter that it has few miles you may still find yourself with a lemon. Also check to see where the car came from. If you can’t get an idea from the seller run the car through Car Fax to make sure it is not stolen and the title is clear.

Buying a car for a teen is much like buying a car for your family with a few small exceptions. You want the car to be something they will enjoy driving and can drive for years to come if they choose to. You want the car to be safe for both themselves and their friends just as you want your family car to be safe for your family. I am sure your teen will want the hotrod or the year with the looks of a millionaire but lean more toward the save on gas put put car with an OK paint job. A car with room is great for friends but can be hard on the driver trying to afford the gas as just another small reminder.

First car memories – Part 25

My First Car

My first car was almost a 6 cylinder, stick-shift, Jaguar E-type coupe – maroon with wire wheels and knock-off hubs. It was only $2,200. But my dad, being more practical than I was at 17 (I was 17, not my dad!) steered me away from that sexy, beautiful machine, with horror stories about Lucas electrics and expensive repairs.

Which led me, on the same used car lot, to my actual first car, a light green 1969 Oldsmobile 88. Yes, I know that that brand doesn’t even exist anymore! For those of you that don’t remember seven years back, GM built Olds as a better-than-Pontiac, almost Buick. Even with its storied history – check out Ransom E. Olds place in automotive history, along with the 1903 curved dash Olds – the brand had no reason to exist.

The car was huge, I mean aircraft carrier huge, and had a 455 cubic inch engine. This displacement, I think, was to prove that it was an Olds engine and not a Chevy, which built a 454. At that time, there was a lot of controversy over whether the engine in your upmarket GM car was actually built by the division whose name was on the car. Now of course, GM sells Saturn Redlines with Honda engines. But I digress.

The car was also fast, really fast. Even its massive girth couldn’t keep that HUGE engine from propelling it in a straight line with some serious alacrity. Zero to 60 arrived in the low sevens, and all was great fun unless you wanted to go around a curve, or you calculated the behemoth’s gas mileage.

The handling was not sterling. The big brute wallowed and floated in the style of its day and understeered its was around corners with body roll that mimicked a banked oval on flat ground. But the ultimate characteristic of this leviathan was its gas mileage – or lack thereof. When it was out of tune, and for some reason it needed points, plugs and timing all the time, it got 4 MPG! Yes 4 MPG! In tune, it got close to 9! Even with 29 cent a gallon gas, I couldn’t afford to keep it running on my $1.35 an hour wage.

There was one cool thing about the car though. It had one of the first cockpit style dashboards where the instrument and the center stack were aimed a little toward the driver and the dash was not a flat plane across the vast expanse of the car.

I had my 88 for three months before I decided that it was time for something more economical, and a VW Super Beetle took its place. I don’t know if it was my experience with that Olds, or just something in my genes, but I have never liked, nor have I ever owned, a big car since. But for a while, I could style with the best of them, while I wasted fossil fuels with the worst of them.
